As the saying goes, from little things, big things grow – and Graham Thomson Motors is no exception to this.The business is now housed on an impressive 2.4 hectare lot on the corner of Doyles and New Dookie Road, but started out in a shed in New Dookie Road in the 1960s. It began when Graham Thomson’s brother Bryan began selling used trucks as a partner in Ryan Equipment company. Graham then joined Bryan and prominent Shepparton cyclist, Richard Moore in the business until, in 1964, they moved to Verney Road and started Shepparton Truck Sales and Service.During the next decade, the business grew to service not only the agriculture industry, but Shepparton’s transport industry as well. To offer the district’s transport industry more choice and better service, Shepparton Truck Sales and Service took on its first truck franchise in 1972 with Volvo, Kenworth and UD franchises followed. In 1974 the company moved to purpose built premises in Numurkah Road, which served as home until the big move to its present site. Graham purchased the business from his brother Bryan in 1984 and renamed it Graham Thomson Motors.

    

That same year his brother Bruce came on board as the company’s financial controller. For the next few years, the brothers worked to grow the business, until Bruce left to forge a name for himself in the finance industry. In 1986, Graham Thomson Motors added another franchise to its showroom with Mitsubishi Trucks. During the next 10 years the company outgrew its Numurkah Road premises, to move in 1997, to its impressive new location.

Expanding into the future Graham Thomson Motors new home, offers the only legal B-double route through Shepparton, which means drivers no longer have to leave the route to search for maintenance facilities.Since moving, the business has extended its operating hours from 8am to 7pm Monday to Thursday and Saturdays 8am to 1pm. At the rear of the site, the complex’s huge workshop can accommodate 10 trucks, or 25m-long B-doubles under one roof for servicing – with plenty of room to move.
